I had the honor of reading off questions for the final round in the 7th-8th grade category of Chicago’s city-wide Battle of the Books competition April 17,2010 at the Chicago Vocational Career Academy (2100 E. 87th Street). Mayor Daley also attended as a special guest, and I shook his hand!
Over 1500 students participated in teams from over 115 schools, testing their knowledge in one of two categories, 4th-6th grade or 7th-8th grade. It was a close competition with Jackson taking first place, LaSalle taking second, and Solomon taking third.
The Battle of the Books program encourages ongoing reading and partnership. The Smell of Old Lady Perfume was an official selection for the 7th-8th grade reading list which included 21 books.
