Visit to Kanoon Magnet School in Chicago

June 1st, 2010

I recently had the opportunity to visit a group of about 150 6th, 7th and 8th graders at a CPS school in Little Village.  It was a quite exciting to see my characters through their eyes in an art project.

Helping kick-off final round of the 2010 CPS Battle of the Books

April 17th, 2010

Chicago, IL.  April 17, 2010 – A school year worth of reading and teambuilding culminated in Chicago’s city-wide Battle of the Books competition April 17th at the Chicago Vocational Career Academy (2100 E. 87th Street).  I read off questions for the final round in the 7th-8th grade category.  Mayor Daley also attended as a special guest.

Over 1500 students participated in teams from over 115 schools,  testing their knowledge in one of two categories, 4th-6th grade or 7th-8th grade.   It was a close competition with Jackson taking first place, LaSalle taking second, and Solomon taking third.

The Battle of the Books program encourages ongoing reading and partnership.   The Smell of Old Lady Perfume was an official selection for the 7th-8th grade reading list which included 21 books.
